The "baiting effect" (also known as the "decoy effect") is a term used in economics and marketing to describe the phenomenon whereby the addition of a third option (the "decoy") changes a consumer's preference between two original options. For example, if a consumer is presented with two options, A and B, and they prefer A, but a third option, C, is introduced that is less attractive than option B but more attractive than option A, the consumer may choose B instead of A because C makes B look more appealing in comparison. The "baiting effect" occurs because the decoy option changes the relative attractiveness of the other options.
