Lookingfor a good children’s book? Internet users can find hundreds of them. Thesebooks are from around the world. And they are free of charge. Theproject is called the International Children’s Digital (数字)Library.

The goalis to offer electronic(电子的) versions of morethan 10,000 children’s books in at least 100 languages.

Projectdevelopers have been working with children to design easy ways to search thecollection and read the books. An image of each page appears on the computer.Users can also print copies on paper.

Officialssay the project has been designed for two main groups of users. The first ischildren between the ages of three and thirteen, along with their teachers andparents.

Thesecond group is researchers in the area of children’s literature. The bookschosen for the collection are meant to help children understand the world inwhich they live.

Literatureis one way to teach young people about new ideas. The idea behind thecollection is that an interesting story not only helps children understand whothey are, but may also influences their desire to explore the world.

Projectorganizers say they have chosen books that show the similarities anddifferences in ways of life around the world. The aim is to create a greaterunderstanding of other people’s cultures and beliefs. The InternationalChildren’s Digital Library is also an attempt to use technology to strengthenlibraries around the world.

Thedigital library is a project of the University of Maryland and the InternetArchive(档案馆). The Internet Archive is building anelectronic library of Internet sites and other digital collections as acultural record.

TheChildren’s Library project is supported by the National Science Foundation andthe Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Library of Congress and otherorganizations are also involved. The first materials appeared in 2002.

The goalis to have all 10,000 books online in 2007. So far, the collection containsmore than 500 books.
