The young have been described as troublemakers. They make adults feel unsafe to

The young have been described as troublemakers. They make adults feel unsafe to walk the streets and are generally out of control, according to those who took part in a recent survey in Britain.

Yet the same report says thousands take part in community work and carry out charity(慈善) work. The British newspaper The Sunday Sun thought it was time to give youngsters a chance to have their say.

They set up a special survey—Demons(魔鬼) or Darlings? — to ask a series of questions. For example, if they had clashed(冲突) with important figures, how they spend their spare time, and how they feel towards adults.

About 84.2 percent believe adults have become less tolerant(宽容的) towards young people. They describe adults as “judgmental”. More than half of the young participants(参与者) appear to have been treated unfairly.

Meghan Bentley, 16, and 17-year-old Chelsea Laver-Seeley said they had had enough of the public’s understanding of teenagers as troublemakers.

“We are not all like that,” Bentley said. “It’s very stereotypical(有成见的). We don’t all hang around street corners.”

Both Bentley and Laver-Seeley are students at Mount Grace School, Hertfordshire. They help younger students with their studies and go into primary schools and read to children.

Why did teenagers get the reputation(名声) they have? Bentley said she thought the media’s fixation(思维定势) with youths and gang culture was having a bad effect on young people.

“Kids watch a lot of TV and they look up to the people they see there,” she said. “Some think it’s cool to carry knives. They think that’s what’s right.

“If they knew what was available to them and what they could get involved in, there would be more choice for them,” Bentley said.

She added: “Give us a bit of praise every now and then, to show people the good stuff teenagers are doing. It’s about time we got some recognition for what we do.
