It's a boy! The first elephant baby to be born live on the Internet entered the world on Saturday, and mother and son are doing well, Zurich Zoo said.

Asian elephant Ceyla-Himali gave birth to her baby boy in front of an estimated 46,000 viewers on the Internet. Her offspring took his first steps about 15 minutes after his birth at 5:34 a.m., the zoo said.

He weighs around 308 pounds and is three feet, five inches tall.

Zoo director Alex Ruebel told Reuters the baby would be named through a competition held with the help of a local supermarket chain. It has to be an Asian name, which is not used for humans. We want to use this process to teach people about the region these elephants call home, Ruebel said.

Asian elephants are an endangered species, with only 35,000 left roaming the Asian forests compared to 60,000 about 20 years ago. They are far more rare than their African cousins, which still number some 600,000 to 650,000.

Asian elephants have smaller ears than other species and only some males have tusks, making those few animals popular targets for poachers(偷猎者).
