Conversation 1

M：The taxi is waiting downstairs．Let's hurry．

W：Wait a minute．I'II take some food with us．I don't like the food they serve on trains．

M：Oh, come on．We don't have much time left．

W：Relax! The train isn't going to leave without us!

Conversation 2

M：Give me a hand．I have to get the key．Oh, sorry I can't find it anywhere

W：It's dark here．Let me turn on the light first, or you'll never find it．

M：Oh．Here it is．

W：At last! Now we can unlock the door．

Conversation 3

M：Did you sleep well last night, Jean?

W：Oh, Arthur, I've been having a hard time sleeping lately．

M：As far as I know, this is usually caused by stress．Are you stressed at all?

W：Well, I'm really worried about my grades．I didn't think this course would be so stressful．

M：You're a good student．I' m sure you can do well．What you need to do is to relax．

W：You're probably right．I just wish it were that simple．How can I stop feeling so anxious all the time?

M：Taking a yoga class or learning some relaxation techniques can help you cope with your stress．

W：You are always helpful．Thank you very much．

M：How's your job search going, Linda?

W：I don't know．I only started looking for a job a few days ago．

M：I see．Have you found anything that you're interested in?

W：I've only found a few openings in my field．

M：What kind of job are you looking for?

W：I' m trying to find a job in sound engineering．

M：There's not a very high demand for that kind of job, is there?

W：Unfortunately not．If I can't find anything in the field, then I could also work in the tourism field．

W：Do you think that there's life on other planets, Tom?

M：I think there must be．

W：Why is that?

M：I don't think it would make sense if we were the only beings in this whole world．I think the world is just far too big for that．

W：Do you think that there's intelligent life trying to contact us?

M：No, but we're trying to contact them．

W：I suppose you're right．

M：I think that many countries are working hard to find a planet that we can live on in the future so that when global warming destroys this planet, humankind will not become extinct．

W：Do you really think that global warming will destroy Earth some day?

M：There's a lot of evidences that suggest it will, but I don't think it's going to happen any time soon．

Conversation 6

W：Have you ever been in an earthquake, Michael?

M：Yes, I experienced once when I was in Tokyo．The earthquake only lasted a few seconds though and then it was over．

W：Do you remember anything?

M：I don't remember, but it wasn't very serious．Have you ever been in an earthquake, Jocelyn?

W：No, but I was in quite a few hurricanes when I was younger．

M：Where are you from?

W：I'm from the Western Coast．It's very common there．

M：Did your house ever get damaged from the winds?

W：Most of the time we were lucky, but once our living room was destroyed．

M：Wow．That must have really been scary．

W：Actually，some of my memories of my childhood were of spending time with my family in the basement waiting for the hurricane to pass．

M：Have you ever experienced a flood?

W：No, but my father's car was destroyed in a flood once．It actually happened the day after he bought the car!

M：How goodness!

Section B

As part of our anniversary tradition, I always buy my wife a single rose．I made that decision on the first wedding anniversary．But it wasn't easy．My heart argued for giving her one rose on the first anniversary, two roses on the second, and so forth．But my head argued that, in twenty or thirty years, a roomful of roses would not mean as much as something simpler－not to mention the cost! In the end, my heart and head reached a compromise(妥协)．So I buy only one rose on every wedding anniversary and then we treat ourselves to a wonderful and romantic dinner．Over the years, Bev has dried every anniversary rose and saved the petals(花瓣)in a jar．

The roses helped teach me something about making decisions－any kind of decisions．I've discovered that good decisions are made with both my head and my heart．Together a cool head and a warm heart can solve most problems．A cool head asks the hard question．A cool head thinks it through．A cool head objectively weighs the options．But a warm heart asks the tender question．A warm heart considers feelings and relationships．A warm heart asks what feels right．

Making the right decision is often difficult．And it seems that we never have enough information when we need to decide．But the best decisions are made from both a cool head and a warm heart．It usually takes both of them to make the right decision．
