The poachers had likely killed the little female`s parents and 3herin the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,inAfrica. Then they took her across the border into Rwanda, 4to sell her as a pet.
But the buyerdidn`t bring 5;he brought the police. The Rwandan authorities 6
the young gorilla to the nearbyheadquarters of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project. The vets (兽医) there realized that shehad not been given 7food or water,butthey were much more worried about something else. "Baby gorillas simplydon`t 8without their mother`s constant body contact," says vet Chris Whittier. If they didn`t quickly establish a 9relationshipwith the baby gorilla,which her caretakers named Dunia,she 10not survive.
Dunia neededcontact,butshe resisted 11at first,shying awayfrom people who reached for her. Three caretakers worked in shifts,taking 12holding her,carryingher around on their backs,and cradling her while sheslept. 13she became stronger,a monthafter she was res-cued her 14revealed the psychological stress shecarried inside-much of her hair fell out. That was a delayed 15tothe combined traumatic experiences of losing her parents and being kept-with apoor diet-by the poachers.
After six months of loving carethat included around-the-clock attention,a good diet,and a
16home at the project`sheadquarters,Duniawas looking and acting like a 17,happyyoung gorilla should. "Dunia is sort of a shy show-off," says Whittier. "Her 18is growingand she`s becoming more independent,but when sheis 19,the first thing she does isrun back to her 20,just like shewould to her mother."
