One hundred years ago, there was a clear difference among town and country. But the motor car has changed all that. One motorway can take a large amount of land. Cars are also a basic part of modern life. Everyone want one and the car industry takes on thousands of people. The economy of a country depends on it. But does this have to be the result? Industry and modern life don't have to be enemies of beauty. Progress needs not be ugly. It doesn't have to destroy all the countryside around. We'll have beauty and progress because we really want to have. We need clean rivers and open countryside just as much as people do one hundred years ago. Perhaps in some ways, we need it even more. Things as clean water and good air are getting scarcer.
