Hemophiliaresults when a gene fails to produce the protein needed for the blood

Hemophilia(血友病)resultswhen a gene fails to produce the protein needed for the blood to clot, orchange from a liquid to a solid. The fault gene is passed from parents tochildren. People with hemophilia suffer uncontrolled bleeding. This can resultin pain, tissue swelling(肿胀)andpermanent damage to joints and muscles.

One in every ten thousand males has the mostcommon kind of hemophilia. It’s extremely rare for females to have it. Patientscan be treated with the missing clotting substance. They generally can leadnormal lives.

Scientists say gene treatment may be apossible way to cure hemophilia in the future. Researchers consider hemophiliathe best disease for gene treatment because it is caused by a single faultgene. Also, only a small increase in the missing clotting substance couldprovide good results. They tested gene treatment in six patients with severehemophilia.

First, they removed skin cells from thepatients’ arms. The researchers grew the cells in the laboratory. They addedcopies of the needed gene taken from healthy people. Then they created hundredsof millions of genetically changed cells. They placed these cells into thepatients’ stomachs. After four months, the amount of blood clotting substancein the blood increased in four of the six patients. Some of the patientsreported a decrease in bleeding problems. However, ten months later, theclotting substance was no longer in the patients’ blood. It is not clear if theimplanted cells died or the added genes stopped working.

The researchers say the study showed thatgene treatment is safe for people with the most common kind of hemophilia. Butothers expressed concern about the treatment because the effects were onlytemporary.

C. Peoplewith hemophilia don’t have any physical damage and can lead normal lives.

D. Itdoesn’t succeed in making protein needed for blood to form into clots.

2. Peoplewith hemophilia can live normally when______.

A. theyare treated with the missing clotting substance

答案:1C2A3B4D

提示:

通读全文,可以确定1题中C项不正确,故1题选C。Patients can be treated with the missingclotting substance. They generally can lead normal lives. 所以2题选择A.3题参见文章最后一段。4题问文章的题目,因为文章主要介绍hemophilia的基因疗法,故选D项
