Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr．, from Kenya, and Ann Dunham, a white American from Wichita, Kansas．His parents met while attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was a foreign student．They separated when he was two years old and later divorced．Obama's father received a Doctor's Degree from Harward University and returned to Kenya and saw his son only once more before dying in an automobile accident in 1982．

After her divorce(离婚), Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Soetoro's home country of Indonesia in 1967, where Obama attended local schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old．During his time in Indonesia, he first attended St．Francis Assisi Catholic, a religious school, for almost three years．When Obama was in the third grade, he wrote an essay saying that he wanted to become president．His teacher later said that his reason for becoming president was that he wanted to make everybody happy．

He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal(母亲一方的)grandparents while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade in 1971 until his graduation from high school in 1979．Obama's mother returned to Hawaii in 1972 and died of cancer a few months after the publication of his biography, Dreams from My Father, in 1995．

In his biography(传记), Obama describes his experiences growing up in his mother's middle class family．Of his early childhood, Obama recalled,“That my father looked nothing like the people around me－that he was black as pitch(沥青), my mother white as milk－barely registered in my mind．”

Some of his fellow students at Punahou School later told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin that Obama was mature for his age, and that he sometimes attended college parties and other events in order to associate with African American students and military(军事的)service people．
