In most schools and universities theexamination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds orfails in mastering a particular subject. Although it does the job quiteefficiently, its side effects are also enormous.

Tobegin with, examinations lower the standards of teaching. Since students andteachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to onlytraining their students exam techniques. No subjects can be taught successfullymerely through being approached with intent to take examinations. In addition,the most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. Asthe examination score is the only standard for academic performance, a studentis driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively.

Infact, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything reallyimportant to the students’ academic development. If that is the case, whycannot we make a change and adopt something more efficient and reliable thanexaminations?
