Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where wecan go and relax and play computer games and chat with friends. Some olderpupils in the school have this but I think there should be a place for everyoneto go when they want to switch off from the lessons.

Richard form USA: I think it would be greatto have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. If that day was a Fridayor a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. I’m sure we could learnjust as much in fewer hours.

David from UK: The school dinners areabsolutely disgusting. There is a little shop called a “tuck shop” which we cango to in our breaks but it just sells rubbish. I’d like to be able to buy fruitand healthy snacks.

Hannah from Australia: My schoolenvironment is great – especially the sports facilities. We’ve got a swimmingpool and tennis courts. It’s teachers I’d change. I think they should give usmore freedom and choice about how we study and what we study. I also think it’sridiculous that we have to wear a school uniform.

Sam form Mexico: I’d like clean toilets andshowers, a big library, big lockers and a restaurant. Not much to ask for.

The passage presents what the five studentsfrom different countries think about their own schools and describe what theirdream school should be like. Their ideas vary.

My school has a beautiful large campus witha variety of advanced teaching facilities. What makes me feel very proud isthat the teachers here are friendly and knowledgeable. Whenever I am puzzled bythe problems, whether in study or in life, I can turn to them for help.However, on the other hand, there exists something that disturbs me a lot. Toomuch everyday homework and frequent tests always keep me too busy to have agood rest and develop my interests.

If I could make a school, in my mind, theschool should provided more hands-on, personalized, engaging subjects oractivities that preserve students’ curiosity and joy of learning. The teacherswould focus on teaching the students how to learn, not what to learn, creatinglifelong learners, explorers and discovers. In addition, I think it would begreat to have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. I am sure we couldlearn just as much in fewer hours if we improved our learning efficiency.
