In the atmosphere, carbon dioxide actsrather like a one-way mirror —— the glass in the roof of a greenhouse whichallows the sun’s rays to enter but prevents the heat from escaping.

According to a weather expert’s prediction,the atmosphere will be 3℃ warmer in the year 2050 than it is today, if mancontinues to burn fuels at the present rate. If this warming up took place, theice caps in the poles would begin to melt, thus raising sea level severalmetres and severely flooding coastal cities. Also, the increase in atmospherictemperature would lead to great changes in the climate of the northernhemisphere, possibly resulting in an alteration of earth's chief food-growingzones.

In the past, concern about a man-madewarming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic ismuch colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are nowpaying more attention to West Antarctic, which may be affected by only a fewdegrees of warming, in other words, by a warming on the scale that willpossibly take place in the next fifty years from the burning of fuels.

Satellite pictures show that large areas ofAntarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that awarming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms theearth.

However, most of the fuel is burnt in thenorthern hemisphere, where temperatures seem to be falling. Scientistsconclude, therefore, that up to now natural influences on the weather haveexceeded those caused by man. The question is: Which natural cause has mosteffect on the weather?

I believe the earth is getting warmer andwarmer and carbon dioxide has played an important role in it. The burning offossil fuels adds extra greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, which causes a risein the temperature. But it is possible for the human race to slow down globalwarming.

One of the solutions is to increase thenumber of trees on the earth. The more trees are growing on the earth, the lesscarbon dioxide will be in the atmosphere. Besides, fossil fuels should be usedproperly and thus less carbon dioxide will be sent out.

Climate change would be much easier toreduce if people understand how it happens. Public education will make peoplesupport governmental action and take an active part in reducing global warming.
