The arrival of World Book and Copyright Day alwaysdraws public attention to young people's reading, but mere temporary attentioncannot increase the popularity of reading. The lack of reading books isbecoming an increasingly severe problem in China.
According to a survey by the United NationsEducational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Shanghai residentsread most in China, with only eight books read a year on average. About 1.3billion Chinese people read less than one book every year, if textbooks are nottaken into account.
Nowadays, children's spare time is occupiedby attending various tutorial classes, taking exam preparation training, andlearning piano, painting, dancing, weiqi, or other techniques.
"Childhood is a good period forreading literature. Reading can wake up the true nature of children, and goodeducation should fit children's nature," said Zhou Yimin, who is also ateacher.
Scholars are also worriedabout another adverse impact of the lack of reading. "If a child hadnever read a book from beginning to end before the fourth grade, he or she maylack the ability to read an entire book," said Jiang Junjing, anexperienced teacher. What is worse, it may result in a lack of the ability tograsp the whole situation. 试题答案
【答案】
Reading books
According to a recent survey, the lack ofreading books is a serious problem in China. Too busy with school work andtutorial classes, children seldom have chances to read, which raises greatconcern among the scholars about the serious consequence.
I strongly believe thatreading books are very important. Firstly, as Francis Bacon put it, “readingmakes a full man”. By reading different books, we perfect ourselvesmentally. “Histories make men wise; poems witty; the mathematicssubtitle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able tocontend”. Secondly, good bookscan delight, entertain andeducate us. The importance of reading books is gaining new insight orperspectives on issues and helps us to have a new understanding of the worldaround. We can apply the insight in everyday life or as a way of building uponthe knowledge that already encompasses our mind and enrich our lives.
One of my favorite book is Prideand Prejudice written by Jane Austen. Basically, this is a story of courtshipand marriage, but through the humorous, sometimes satirical tone of the author,I get to know about how women lived their lives and what the upper and middleclass people centered around in the late18th century England. I smile at thewit of Mr. Bennet, laugh at the mindlessness of Mrs. Bennet. I am totallyimpressed by Lizzy’s eloquence when she debated with Mr. Darcy, and equallymoved when Mr. Darcy finally admitted he had an affection for Lizzy. In a word, with this book, I temporarily escape from the 21st century world, entertainingmyself and at the same time broadening my horizon.
We read books for pleasure. They entertain us. And we read them for profit. They enlighten us. Good booksdraw us into their imaginative worlds and engage us with the power of theirinvention. They enlarge our understanding of ourselves and deepen ourappreciation of life. Therefore, I think reading books is very important.
