In the triathlon held on Wednesday morning,Beth Potter won bronze before Alex Yee pulling off an epic late comeback to win Great Britain’s fifth gold of Paris.

Not everyone had a pleasant experience however, namely Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk who crossed the line a very credible ninth, some 52 seconds after Yee.

Like many, the 29-year-old looked worse for wear as he arrived at the finish and after stumbling past Yee and the other medalists, cameras caught him throwing up in a sight not for the squeamish.

It may have just been a natural reaction with the triathlon one of the most gruelling sports at the Olympics, but the image of Mislawchuk hurling won’t help concerns over the threat of E.coli.

But speaking to Triathlon magazine Canada, Mislawchuk insisted it was the high temperatures in the final laps of the 10km run that made him so ill after finishing ninth, 52 seconds behind Yee.

‘For me, whether I was fourth or 55th it doesn’t really matter. I tried to win a medal and I went out there and was basically in third place with the two French guys for five and a half or 6 km,’ Mislawchuk said.

‘I vomited ten times after the race … it got hot in the last laps.’

The river, which spans 483-miles, has long had a reputation for being dirty. It was more than a century ago, in 1923, that swimming in it was banned officially.

Compared to most other large European rivers, the ability of the Seine to dilute all the urban sewage and farmland waste is low.

Alongside decades of agricultural pollution, untreated residential and industrial sewage has been discharged into the river during periods of high rainfall when the sewage systems with Paris are backed up.

In the weeks before the Olympics, tests continued to show unsafe levels of E.coli and other bacteria in the water.

This meant that athletes could become seriously ill if they swim in it during the Games.

The triathlon has been one of the most talked about sports at this summer’s games due to concerns over athletes swimming in the Seine.

Organisers had spent over a £1billion trying to clean up the river in time, yet tests showed pollution levels were still too high.

Just a week before the start of the event, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo kept her previous promise to swim in the river, proving that it is safe for the upcoming competitions.

On July 17, she was joined by Tony Estanguet, Paris 2024 Olympic president, and Marc Guillaume, the top government official for the Paris region. They all took a dive into the water, among others.

Rider, who came 29th, told reporters beforehand: ‘In preparation for this race, I knew there was going to be some E.coli exposure. So I’ve been trying to increase my E.coli threshold by exposing myself to a bit of E.coli in day-to-day life.’

Asked how he had exposed himself to more bacteria, Rider said: ‘It’s a proven method, backed by science.

‘It’s just little things, throughout your day. Like not washing your hands after you go to the bathroom and stuff like that.’

Dr Eades, who has treated patients admitted to hospital with bloody diarrhoea from E.coli, said: ‘If I knew him, I’d say “that’s a bit unwise”.’
