Deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater inEast Tennessee is a body of water known as the Lost Sea. It is listed by theGuinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest underground lake. TheLost Sea is part of an extensive (covering a large area) and historic cavesystem called Graighead Caverns.

The caverns have been known and usedsince the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands (becoming largein size) into a series of huge rooms opening on the side of the mountain. Onemile from the entrance, in a room called“TheCouncil Room”,many Indian artifacts(手工艺品)have been found.

For many years it had been consideredthat there was a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was notdiscovered until 1905. That year, a thirteen-year-old boy namedBen Sands crawled into a small opening three hundred feet underground. He foundhimself in a large cave half filled with water.

Today, tourists visit the Lost Sea andride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats. More than thirteen acres ( 英亩 ) of water have been mapped out so farand still no end of the lake has been found. Even though teams of divers havetried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent (the size of a large area)of itis still unknown.
