Christopher Eccleston has made no secret of his disdain for his 2005 series of Doctor Who, previously branding it a ‘mess’.

The actor, 60, has also spoken candidly about his mental health struggles, having been hospitalised with severe clinical depression following a breakdown in 2016.

Now, Billie Piper, 41 – who starred as Rose Tyler in the BBC sci-fi series – has shared that she knew Christopher was ‘struggling’ while they worked together.

Her comments come after Christopher said at a fan convention last year: ‘The first series was a mess, and it wasn’t to do with me or Billie – it was to do with the people who were supposed to make it.’

Speaking in a new interview, actress Billie – who was 23 when she landed her Doctor Who role, which she later reprised during David Tennant’s reign – told The Independent: ‘I now know that he was having a hard time, but I’m not sure I understood at the time how troubled he was with it all.’
