The boxer who fought Algeria’s Imane Khelif at the Paris Olympics said her ‘nose hurt so much’ she struggled to breathe after quitting their fight in tears after just 46 seconds.

Khelif was named the winner of their brief contest on Thursday as Italy’s Angela Carini officially abandoned the fight after taking heavy damage in the opening stages.

Carini’s head guard was knocked loose such was the force of one of Khelif’s shots with reports suggesting she has suffered a broken nose.

Khelif was disqualified at the 2023 world championships after being judged to have failed gender eligibility tests. However, the International Olympic Committee cleared her to compete at Paris 2024, satisfied she has complied with all rules to fight in the French capital.

Speaking shortly after Carini’s decision to withdraw, Italian PM, Meloni, criticised the IOC’s decision to allow Khelif to compete and said the contest ‘was not a competition on equal terms’.

‘I do not agree with the IOC’s choice, I have not for years,’ Meloni said.

Khelif, 25, has always competed in the women’s boxing division and has identified as female since birth.

And in an interview with French broadcaster BFM TV, her father, Omar Khelif, said: ‘My child is a girl. She was raised as a girl.

During the interview, Omar Khelif also produced an official Algerian registration document which reveals his daughter’s date of birth on May 2, 1999 and the fact that she is registered as a female.
